Artist Statement

About My Practice

My artwork is often true to nature. I enjoy working from first-hand experience and reference. Careful research is undertaken before each project; Which includes visiting museum collections and specific locations.

Whilst I aim for accurate representation, my work emanates a sense of spirit and place; there's always an element of personal reflection and response.

I feel that this delivers a particular authenticity, that only people who carefully research, observe and understand a subject in detail would be able to translate from pencil to paper.

I use traditional media such as; graphite pencil, charcoal and ink. I predominantly work in black and white because I feel it helps to recreate my personal response with greater accuracy. However I have successfully completed projects in full colour using watercolour and pastels.
